ShredSpots
The story of how street-born culture met emerging tech — and was immortalized through design

Intro
Overview
ShredSpots is the global progression engine for Gen Z action sports, starting with skateboarding. It solves the fragmentation of trick clips, skate spots, and gear by letting skaters track, tag, and share every moment of progression—from Kickflip 180s to legendary picnic-table spots. The product blends cultural fluency with machine learning to build the most sophisticated trick recognition system to date. Think Strava meets Supreme, backed by Google Cloud.

My role
Staff Product Designer — Lead product designer and strategic partner to founders
Shaped product direction, AI UX strategy, and design system to scale.
Who did I collaborate with?
Worked in a fast-moving core team with:
• Founder and Advisors (Snap, Meta, Google)
• Engineers and ML Engineers
• PM
• Designers
• Google Cloud Team
Scope of responsibilities
• Defined the product’s metadata model and UX for tagging tricks, spots, and gear
• Designed the core experience for AI-assisted trick detection
• Created scalable, component-based design system across iOS and Web
• Balanced skate culture with data needs — ensuring authenticity for users, and structure for AI
• Championed interaction patterns that helped users track progression, discover spots, and level up
• Initiated research partnerships and facilitated alignment between design, ML, and product

Street-Born App.
Global Skate Culture.
ShredSpots wasn’t built by a founder trying to disrupt an industry. It was born in the streets — by a skater who felt the need to save, collect, and share skate spots with the community. So he taught himself to code and built the product from scratch, fueled entirely by love for skateboarding. There was no design system, no onboarding, no monetization strategy — just belief, community support, and a mission the culture cared about. And that was enough to attract over 50,000 skaters around the world who fell in love with the idea and the product.
Centering the Experience Around What Skaters Value Most
Skaters don’t open an app to scroll — they open it to shred. I reframed the product around its real-world core: the map is the experience. By leading the transition to a map-first architecture, we anchored discovery in location, not UI, making ShredSpots the most intuitive and purpose-built skate map available

900%
A map-first layout, a visible “+” button, and a community leaderboard drove a 900% increase in spot submissions — turning skaters from users into active contributors
